Introduction to Remote Access -- Using Library Resources from Off-Campus

Most of the electronic resources from the PBA Library are purchased with the restriction that they are for members of the PBA community only.  We must "authenticate" each user before they are allowed access.  This is accomplished two ways.
1.  If you are using PBA Library resources from a University-owned computer, your connection to the campus network identifies you as entitled to access the online library resources.  Likewise if you are off-campus, but connect to the internet by a PBA-provided dialup connection, you are automatically identified.

For Dialup Instructions,
click on the link below that matches your computer's operating system.

(Technology Services provides step-by-step instructions for configuring your computer to dial PBA.

Windows 2000 / ME

2. If you are off-campus and access the internet through another service provider (for example, the corporate network at your office, or AOL), then the library's information providers will not know of your PBA affiliation. You need a "proxy" address to identify you.

Proxy Server Instructions -- How?

Whenever you click on a link on the Library web page that requires authentication, a computer called a proxy server checks your address.  If it is within the PBA family of addresses, your request is passed transparently to the resource.  But if you are outside, you will need to log in. When you click on the database link...

...you will see a dialog box similar to this one.

Follow these
simple steps:

1.  Put the insertion point in the first box, and type your PBA network user name.
2.  Put the insertion point in the second box, and type your PBA network password.
3.  Click the "Submit" button.

Proxy Server Problems

If you have difficulty, one or more of these suggestions may be helpful.
1.  You must have a PBA computer network account.  These are created and maintained by Technology Services.  Usually a small card with your username and password is distributed when you register.  If you did not get one, or have lost it, contact Technology Services.
2.  Your password is case sensitive.  Unless it is all caps, make sure your Caps Lock is off.
3.  An error message like this: "That username or password was incorrect. Please try again." usually means there is a problem with your account.  If you are quite sure you have entered your username and password correctly, contact Technology Services.
4.  If you click on a database link and get neither a login dialog box like the one shown above nor a connection to the database, or, if you click the "Submit" button and get no response, the problem is probably with the proxy server itself.  You may contact either the Library or Technology Services to report it.
5.  If your login appears to go normally but there is no response after that, the problem may be with the library's information provider.  Contact the Library to report it.
