The goal in preparing this library pathfinder has been to bring together a variety of resources in several formats, so that the students and faculty members of Palm Beach Atlantic University may develop an understanding of the nature and significance of a worldview, discover some of the issues that are affected by one’s worldview, and observe the contrast of the Christian worldview with competing views of reality.
The
pathfinder contains a selective not an exhaustive bibliography. This is a
“living” document; send your suggestions for additions and/or brief
annotations to
library@pba.edu. Note that books with call numbers are in the PBA
collection; others may be obtained through interlibrary loan. |

The failure of anti-Christian humanism is a challenge to Christianity, which tells the “truth about God and man” and gives “the answers people want and need,” to “proclaim the truth” in our time.
Sire, James W.
The Universe Next Door.4th Ed. InterVarsity, 2004.
B 823.3 .S56 1997
Sire defines the concept denoted by the term “worldview,” and by using Christian theism as the benchmark for truth and reality, compares and contrasts deism, naturalism, existentialism, nihilism, Eastern pantheistic monism, and the New Age movement. Concludes that non-Christian systems are false and inadequate.

Periodical Databases
Ebsco Academic Search Premier
Ebsco’s ASP indexes 3,000+ periodicals, popular and scholarly, some in the area of religion, and provides many of its articles in full text. You may access ASP from the link on the library’s main page, and conduct a subject or keyword search.
ProQuest
This database is similar to and may be accessed and searched in the same way as the Ebsco database (above). Although there is overlap with Ebsco in the titles indexed, the number of titles unique to each makes it worthwhile to search both.
Internet Resources
The explosion of the Internet has created a gold mine of information on every topic, including the Christian faith. Although material from the Internet must be carefully evaluated, there are a number of reliable web sites that provide information in the area of Christian worldview. URLs for the websites will be found at the end of the bibliography for each section or discipline.

A vast amount of print and electronic literature, far too many titles to list, is available for the study of the Bible and Theology—Bible dictionaries, encyclopedias, commentaries, handbooks, concordances, systematic and biblical theologies, and more.
Not to be overlooked are the general encyclopedias (Britannica, Americana), Encyclopedia Judaica, and the New Catholic Encyclopedia.
In addition to the materials available directly and immediately, the PBA interlibrary loan service is able to borrow from another library virtually any book or article that has been published. Requests may be placed by following the link to the electronic request forms on the library web page.
Reference assistance is provided at the reference desk, on the second level of the library, from 8 am-7 pm Monday-Thursday, 8 am-5 pm on Friday, and 1 pm-4 pm on Saturday.
.
Helps to searching the PBA (or other) library collection
The Library of Congress has developed a thesaurus of terms and phrases which are assigned to books to describe the subject content. By conducting a subject search, all the books to which the Library of Congress has assigned that subject heading will be displayed in the web catalog. Following are some of the subject headings related to the Christian world view and its competitors.
Atheism
Buddhism
Buddhism—Doctrines
Christianity and atheism
Christianity and culture
Christianity and existentialism
Christianity and other religions
Christianity and other religions—Buddhism
Christianity and other religions—Hinduism
Christianity and other religions—Islam

Christianity and religious humanism
Existentialism
Hinduism
Humanism
Ideology
Monism
Naturalism—Religious aspects--Christianity
New Age movement
Nihilism (Philosophy)
Pantheism
Theism
Whereas a subject search is narrower and more focused, a keyword search is broader and thus usually retrieves more results.
This search is conducted using any word or phrase related to the topic. Use both to be certain that you discover all the useful material that is available on your subject.
The LCCS organizes all the fields of human knowledge into classes denoted by letters, A-Z. By adding numbers for subdivisions, each book in the library is assigned a call number.
The following broad LC classes may be helpful in doing research on the Christian worldview. You can browse the shelves in these sections or conduct a call number search to retrieve a list of all the books in the PBA collection in these classifications.

Additional materials in a field or discipline can be found by performing a subject or keyword search on OCLC’s WorldCat bibliographic database, available on the PBA library homepage.
Electronic books are provided through netLibrary™ and are accessible through a link to netLibrary™ on the PBA library home page. You may also link to any of the E-books from the PBA online catalog. Although all the netLibrary™ titles “owned” by PBA, are available free to students and faculty, it is necessary to create a personal account on the netLibrary™ website from a computer on the PBA campus. Should you need assistance, any librarian can help you.
